Here is some great advice that Grandpa Richard wants to remind all parents about. Please read this article, and the GO DO what it suggests.

—————-

A mother’s worst nightmare, you’ve fallen asleep and your child has gotten into the medicine cabinet.

Kid-proofing your medicine cabinet is key to the health of your children and what better time to tackle this project than when you’re doing your spring cleaning! Checking your medicine cabinet regularly helps you ensure contents are stored safely and you have the right medications on hand to deal with the most common childhood illnesses.

“A top concern for kid-proofing a medicine cabinet is safe storage,” explains Tracey Phillips, Director, Pharmacy, Rexall. “Always store your medication out of reach from your children in a cool, dry place such as in a large Tupperware container in a high bedroom cabinet or linen closet, do not store medications in the fridge unless directed to do so, and keep medication out of the washroom or kitchen where heat and humidity can impact its effectiveness.”

Here are some other helpful tips from Rexall to get you started:

• Do not call medicine candy. It is important that your child knows the difference.

• Take your unused or expired medications to your local Rexall pharmacy for environmentally safe and free disposal. Flushing medicine down the toilet or throwing it in the trash is harmful to the environment.

• Keep medication in its original labeled container, so you know what’s in the bottle, the expiry date and how to use it.

• The top 5 most important items to have in your kid-proof medicine cabinet are: assorted bandages, children’s formulations of short acting allergy relief medication, a pain reliever (either children’s acetaminophen or Ibuprofen), motion sickness medication, and a reusable hot/cold pack.

Speak with your pharmacist for tips on the best way to kid-proof your medicine cabinet and visit rexall.ca/medicinecabinet for more information on ensuring a safe medicine cabinet.

Here is a common piece of logic. God gave us two ears and only one mouth, therefore we should listen more than we talk. Try getting your young son or daughter to agree to that logic. Let’s face it, children are great noise factories.

It may be possible, however, to get them to be quiet on a warm summer’s night. Take them outside and explain how listening to crickets can tell them the temperature. This works great in much of the United States where common crickets live. If you have common crickets in your home area, you can also try this there.

Stop and quietly listen for about 14 seconds, counting the number of chirps. Take this number and add 40 to it. That will be the approximate temperature near the cricket. The value will be in degrees Fahrenheit. (one day I will have to come up with an easy way to make this work in Celsius)

Keep in mind that the cricket is at ground level, possibly in an area where the temperature is different than where you are standing. This should remind you that how we interpret truth often depends on where we are standing. I will leave it to you to explain that last lesson to your son or daughter.

I have always been fascinated by the fact that many cultures put much more emphasis on name meanings than many North Americans do. I know that my Anglo-Saxon given names, Richard and William, have meanings, but that is not why my parents picked them.

Here is a guest article about name meanings, written by Warren Wong. Enjoy.

A given name or a first name is the name given to a person to differentiate that person from someone else in the family or someone who carries the same surname or last name. This name is given to a person by the parents or guardians. The name is not carried down from generation to generation like the surname. Different groups have different name meanings and use the given names and surnames in different ways.

In most European and American countries a person’s name is usually written with the given name first followed by the surname. However, in countries such as Hungry the given name generally comes after the surname. In some East Asian countries a given name could be given to an entire group of people and they must share the name. When done in this manner, the given name is meant to denote a whole generation of people rather than just one person.

In most Western countries, people typically have one or more given names. If there is more than one given name, there is one name that is used on daily basis and this is the name that person goes by and then there may be supplementary given names that are referred to as the middle name or names. Legally a child’s given name is the name that is given to them at the time of their birth. This is the name that will appear on the birth certificate. However there are some countries that do not permit the parents to give the child a name that may cause them harm. In this case the name is taken into consideration and it is decided if the name is appropriate or not.

Today there has been an influence by popular culture on the names selected by parents. People are starting to move away from naming their children after another family member to naming their children after people and names that they see in the media. For example, in 2004 in the United Kingdom, Keira became a popular name as people began watching movies with the British actress Keira Knightly in them. Characters from fiction also seem to influence the naming of children as well. Research as shown that when a new name comes out in a television show or a movie there is an increased use of the name in the following year.

People often become dissatisfied with their names and attempt to change them. However, changing your name is not as simple as one might think. In some countries people are not permitted to change their name without legal consent from the parents who gave them the name. This means that if the parents are living then they must sign a paper stating that it is alright for their child to change their name. In other parts of the world, the person wishing to change their name must have a reason for wanting to change their name. For example, they may wish to change their name because it is too hard to spell or they may want to change it for professional reasons, such as actors. There is a procedure that must be followed when changing your name.

My grand daughter Jasmine has a new pet. A snail. She found it in the garden and has provided it with a home of water, pebbles, green growing plants, and a top with small air holes. Her mom even taught her that a snail is an hermaphrodite, meaning it is both a male and a female. Not sure what Jasmine thought of that. (and I’d like to know if her mom actually knew that word or looked it up online!!!)

She told me that its name is Shelley. My question back was, “What is its boy name”. A discussion ensued and she finally gave in and added Brayan to the name.

This got me thinking about other exotic, or non-traditional, pets. The resulting article is found at http://www.grandparichardskids.com/article/top-5-modern-pets.

Interesting coincidence considering the post about obese children yesterday.

I was waiting at a bus stop for my daughter’s fiance to pick me up. It was Kristina’s birthday and he had made reservations at a really nice restaurant. As usual, the ladies (my daughter and grand daughter) were a bit behind schedule, so Les came to pick me up while he was waiting.

While waiting, I noticed the ad on the side of the shelter. I did not write it down, but it went something like this.

“The average fast food meal supplies 60% of the daily calorie requirements of a child.”

The accompanying photo showed a young person looking at a note on the fridge. “Get your soccer stuff ready and we’ll do the drive through on the way to the game.”

Then another quote. “A good quality home cooked meal supplies all the nutrition and less than 1/2 of the calories needed by a growing child.”

So true.

My grand daughter celebrated her 5th birthday recently, and I was invited to the party.

WOW!!!

I would never have imagined what it would be like with close to a dozen 5 year old girls. They coloured, and pasted, and danced, and played vigourously on the deck, and had contests, and, and, and. And never seemed to run out of energy. One innovative contest they had was a variation of the old ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’. Only this one was ‘Pin the Lips on the Bratz’. (and if you do not know what a ‘Bratz’ is, then this grandpa has one over on you!)

There was I (a grandpa) in the midst of this non-stop action, trying to take photos. Let me tell you, trying to take decent photos was a challenge, with young ladies jumping in front of me, and even running up to me and saying ‘Boo!’.

When the cake came out, it had sparklers instead of candles. Jasmine did not realize that you cannot blow sparklers out, and got a little frustrated.

It’s inevitable that your child is going to graduate from school eventually and you may begin to feel the pangs of empty nest syndrome. While understandable, here are tips to help you deal with your child’s graduation.

Think about it for a moment. From birth until now, you have raised your child in preparation for this monumental day – graduation. All of the worries, late night talks, helping with homework, pacing the floor during exam time, have come to this final moment. It doesn’t matter whether your child is graduating from pre-K or high school, it seems as if the years have flown by, doesn’t it?

While you may be experiencing thoughts of sadness, the fact is you brought up this child to succeed, and he or she has done so. Of course you’re proud, but at the same time you know your child will soon leave the nest and it’s hard for you to comprehend. This is a natural feeling and one you need to express. But not too long; you have lots to do. Now is the time to get into full gear and prepare your child to leave for college. He or she may be feeling homesick already and it’s up to you to put up a brave front and organize the move, ensure he or she has everything needed for dorm life.

After your child has gone, his or her departure will take some time to get used to. But think a minute. Just because your child has gone off to college doesn’t mean he or she is gone forever. You will undoubtedly receive calls every day, you’ll visit most weekends, and eventually you will come to accept that your child has grown and has taken a new path in life, one in which you will still be a part of as a parent.

Be happy, you’ve done a wonderful job! You’ve raised a successful, loving, intelligent, and caring child. Now take some time for you. Think of all of the new and wonderful things your grown child will share with you. It’s not the end; it’s the beginning of a new chapter in your child’s life – one you will be a part of for many years to come.
