For the first time in modern history, the number of children dying worldwide before the age of five has fallen below 10 million, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund.
A recent report says the slow down in the rate of child deaths, from 13 million in 1990 to 9.7 million in 2006, is due to a combination of factors, including better immunization, more mothers breastfeeding, and use of mosquito nets to prevent the spread of malaria.
Improvement in this statistic will come primarily from better local health care.
