More on Scavenger Hunts

The key to a successful scavenger hunt is to think about who the players will be and make clues and items that will appeal to them. After you decide what type of scavenger hunt you will be having, you need to spend some time coming up with a list of items to collect, or activities to complete.
Here are some fun ideas:
Patriotic Theme. Great around July 1st in the U.S. and can be adapted to other countries. This can be a lot of fun if you get creative with your hunting list. Include items that will be plentiful during an Independence Day celebration, but also include items that might be hard to find.
Video Scavenger Hunt – Players use video recorders to record themselves doing the silly things on their list. When all the groups get back together, they watch the tapes. Give awards for funniest, most innovative, etc. Alternatively, a parent goes with each group to operate the camera.
Photo Scavenger Hunt – Players use digital cameras to photograph the crazy things on their list. When all the groups get back together, they show their best photos from each section of the list. Give awards for funniest, most innovative, completion, etc. Alternatively, a parent goes with each group to operate the camera.
Mall Scavenger Hunt – Players are set loose in the mall to follow the instructions on their list. (This works well with the camera!) My church’s youth group had a twist on this one. A group of volunteer parents would have their photos taken as if they were criminals. They would then disguise themselves and wander the mall trying not to be found. The rules stated that the “criminals” could go no further than 8 feet into a store; they had to wander the main part of the mall. Groups of young teens were given the “rap sheets” of each adult and to prove that they had found us they wrote down a desription of our disguise. No cameras as the flash would give away our location to other groups.
